The gameplay in Need for Speed: World brings back the overall focus on police chases, street racing even though it's illegal, and tuning the vehicles. There are also more attempts at including some massively multiplayer online aspects into Need for Speed: World.
The setting of Need for Speed: World is a combination of the cities from both Need for Speed Most Wanted and Need for Speed Carbon. The separate cities are Rockport and Palmont, but together they are known as Tri-City. There have been a few alterations made to the design of the cities along with some additional places to help transition them into each other more smoothly.
Need for Speed: World includes more than 100 real cars; ranging from muscle, exotic, SUV, and race cars. There is a great variety for the drivers to choose from. Some of the manufactures of cars are Volkswagen or Alfa Romeo. Need for Speed: World contains 30 different manufactures of cars.
Players can improve the performance of their cars with the customization system found in Need for Speed: World. There are lucky draws and theplayers have a chance of winning valuable car parts from this. The lucky draws in Need for Speed: World include parts from both the Pro and Ultra series. Developers also added a way for players to customize the physical appearance of their cars through body kits.
A new game mode added to Need for Speed: World is called Team Escape. A maximum of four players will come together as a team to work cooperatively. The goal is to make it from the starting point to the ending point. The challenge is that there are police cars chasing all of them.
Another new feature to Need for Speed: World is the Treasure Hunt. Players can take part in a treasure hunt while they're in free roam. The point is to find a total of fifteen gems placed spontaneously around the map of Need for Speed: World. If the player does successfully gather the fifteen gems they'll earn an increase in reputation and currency. Great rewards come from completing the treasure hunt daily. Rare parts are one of the ways the game rewards the player for finding fifteen gems every day.
Need for Speed: World allows player to customize specific skills. This completely replaces the system of leveling up used in previous games. That means there are no more skill points. If a player had used a lot of ski points to build up their skills the game offered them a fair number of skill modifications. That hopefully makes up for the skill points that were lost after skill customization was introduced to Need for Speed: World.
