The main character and played character in Thief: Deadly Shadows remains the same as it was in the last two Thief games. The player will assume the role of a trained thief named Garrett. The time period is different from the previous games because it's combined the Victorian and early renaissance eras to create the mood of Thief: Deadly Shadows. Even though the game incorporates these time periods there are still several advanced technologies.
Thief: Deadly Shadows allows the player to explore the world that's referred to as the City. This is quite different from the previous games in the series because before the game would have the player go straight to the next mission after completing the last. In Thief: Deadly Shadows the player has the chance to freely walk around the City and do various things. For example, he can steal things from the non-player characters roaming the city or search for bonus missions that aren't part of the games major missions.
The stealth aspect of the game comes in when the player gets to the single player campaign missions. The goal is to complete the given objectives, but without being seen by any of the non-player characters that act as guards. The safest way to travel in the Thief: Deadly Shadows world is to stay close to the buildings and hidden in their shadows. Players should stay out of the way of the lights and try to avoid running as it would make loud noises and draw attention.
When a guard spots the player in Thief: Deadly Shadows they will run after and them and attack them. It's suggested that the player take note of the different noises created by each of the actions they can make because they want to remain as quiet as possible.
Players are given a map that show the City from a birds eye view. This will help them decide which routes are the best for the missions they need to complete. The map doesn't necessarily show the location of the player’s character but they should be able to figure out where they are based on their surroundings, which are shown on the map.
Thief: Deadly Shadows gives the player options when it comes to how they complete the missions. The gameplay is open and not linear so the player has more freedoms then they normally would. The storyline of Thief: Deadly Shadows is revealed to the player by showing videos and cut scenes after each mission is finished.
Since exploration was added to Thief: Deadly Shadows the game lets the player roam the district nearest to where the latest missions were completed. The further the player progresses, the more areas are unlocked in the city for the player to explore.
